I'd rather stab my genitals with rusty nails than take this on. I'm fully capable of sorting it out but I don't have near enough patience.

If it were a manual, 2000 dollars cheaper, and near me. Yes, I probably would.

Any used Porsche is project car hell. The fact that the owner doesn't know why it's not running is worse; the hatch glass will be inherently expensive, but a PPI will tell you more about the car and what's wrong with it. The best thing about a PPI is that not only will it tell you how much is wrong with the 928, but you can use it to your advantage and try to drop the asking price based on how much work it needs. Best bet is to find a well sorted out one rather than one that needs work if you want one badly.
Here are two decent examples, even if they're 944s.

Everyone has their reasons for doing whatever it is that they do. for some, the most common reason 944 owners sell them is because they've become money pits; they put more into the car than they can ever get out of them, although that can happen with any P-car. They're fantastic and fun cars regardless of these issues and a pleasure to drive I've been told. If you ever want another, there're quite a few in Michigan and a the east coast states. But if you want a pristine one with zero rust, head over to California, as there are always Porsches up for sale, and usually cheaper than the east side of the country.

I gave $3000 cash for my 87 944 S in 1999. drove it hard all over the country. it was an amazing ride, far quicker in actual real world driving condition than every publications listed testing times. helluva stoplight drag car.it was so easy to just be tooling along both in town and on the highway at a comfy clip cruise control set and not realize that I was 10 15 and 20+ mph over the posted limit. it always felt safe at any speed. it was just unbelievable that i could set the cruise at 140mph just as easily as at 60 or 70. I got my money worth out of her though sold her to a local Porsche salvage in 04 for 1750

Porsches are as safe as a bank vault; every time you slam those doors shut, you know you're locked in a safe. According to my "Buying a Used Porsche" book, you could sell one at $4k-7k. I assume a salvage shop will have different offers but hell, if I was old enough then, I would have bought it off you for that price! :P
My uncle was gonna sell me his 1985.5 944 and buy a 944 Turbo, but since I'm getting a Focus ST instead(damn you real world practicality) he's gonna hold on to it until he can find someone else to sell it to. I personally hope no one buys it so I can see it this summer.

Bought a dog-leg Manual 928S once for that amount in Dutch guilders (pre-euro). Had a blast for almost 2 years, only replaced waterpump/distribution. One thing I clearly remember is the huge amount of Fuel it consumpted: It used 25% of the fuel tank (which contained 90 litres!) on one round of the famous Nordschleife! Other thing is the ease of driving it: Hell of a car and would do it again without any doubt!
